The Padres actually arrived in San Diego in 1936. Originally a minor league team, they won the Pacific Coast League title in 1937. In 1969, San Diego joined the ranks of Major League Baseball as one of the four new expansion teams. Despite initial excitement and a new playing field at San Diego (now Qualcomm) stadium, the team struggled, finishing in last place in each of its first six seasons. The Padres have come a long way since then and they now play in the brand new Petco Park. If you’re not a baseball fan, the gorgeous park itself will keep you entertained. The AFL began in 1960 with eight teams, including Hilton’s Las Angeles Chargers, the Denver Broncos, Dallas Texans, Oakland Raiders, New York Titans, Houston Oilers, Buffalo Bills and the Boston Patriots. After moving to San Diego in 1961, the Chargers went on to play nine more years in the AFL. In all, the Bolts reached the AFL playoffs five times and the AFL championship four times. They won the AFL championship in 1963 when they beat the Boston Patirots.
